Western Influences in Japanese Tattooing 1880-1910

This talk will present unseen tattoo flash from Nagasaki, Japan, painted in the first decade of the 20th century. The designs, drawn by a little-known artist called Ikasaki, demonstrate a remarkable exchange of designs and aesthetics from Western tattooing into Japan, and fundamentally disrupt most conventional understandings about the history of Japanese tattooing, and its stylistic relationship with tattooing in Europe and America. The images in this talk cannot be shared online given Japanese museum rules, and as such, this talk presents a unique opportunity to observe them in detail.
