The Three Hundred Year History of the Modern Tattoo Industry

In this talk, Matt will present an overview of his new book Tattoos: The Untold History of a Modern Art, out in November. He will tell the story of how the modern Euro-American tattoo industry came to be over a three hundred year period, from the earliest mark-makers of the 18^th century, to the multi-million dollar business it is today. He will discuss the untold but key role queer tattooers and clients have played in the development of tattooing, and the artistic and political factors which have shaped what tattooing looks like in the past, today, and into the future.
