This lecture delves into the ritual practices and their meanings during the annual Thai Pusam festival of the Tamil Hindu diaspora living in Malaysia. It illustrates the rich and varied expressions of religious devotion and self-sacrifice. Much of the material presented is from my field research on the Malaysian island of Penang, in 1996. This lecture has been expanded from slides to PowerPoint and includes Chadak Puja (suspension practice and festival from India).
